Come with me on Broadway, where tonight I'm seeing The Roommate. When three-time Tony Award winner and former Actors' Equity member Patti LuPone announced she would be returning to Broadway in a new play opposite Mia Farrow, directed by recent Lifetime Achievement Tony recipient Jack O'Brien and written by Jen Silverman in their Broadway debut, I knew I had to see this. The Roommate follows Sharon, who was recently divorced and lives in Iowa, and invites Robin relocating from New York City to be her roommate. As the two get to know each other better, secrets are revealed, and they learn more about themselves in the process. Now, I really don't want to give too much away other than that, but I really enjoyed this. Now, I've heard a lot of people saying this is like a mix of The Odd Couple and Thelma and Louise, but I'd also add there's a little pinch of Breaking Bad in here as well. When you see it, you'll understand what I mean. And the performances from Patti LuPone and Mia Farrow are both perfect, and their chemistry is top-notch. You can honestly tell that they're real-life friends who actually met through Stephen Sondheim, which is really a true story, by the way. Seriously, look it up. Now, keep in mind This was only the second preview of the show, and I know changes are going to be made between now and opening night of September 12. However, this is a 16-week only limited engagement, so if you want to see Mia Farrow and Patti LuPone and the Roommate, get your tickets now.
