I bet you didn't know that this place existed. This is Nanhua Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in Africa, and it's only an hour from Joburg. Nanhua is the name of the South African branch for the humanistic Buddhist order Foguangshan. The name Nanhua means southern flower and refers to the location of the temple as well as symbolizing virtue and beauty. Construction of this spectacular place lasted about 10 years until it finally opened its door in 2005. In fact, even survived an attempted bombing. In 2002, before construction was completed, the Buramah, a militant Afrikaner right-wing organization, planted a bomb in the basement of the temple. At the time, a South African police spokesperson stated that the blast could have killed and injured dozens of people if the detonator had not failed to set off their explosives. For Guang Shan's mission is to share the message that non-discrimination is fundamental to world harmony and integration and coexistence is the foundation of world peace. The monks here are extremely welcoming and happy to show visitors around. Though it truly is spectacular, please remember to dress modestly and refrain from wearing revealing clothing including sleeveless tops, shorts or mini skirts. Know someone that needs to see this place? Share this with them so they can plan their visit.
