When was the last time you looked at your dog's nails? If you could hear them clicking on the floor or they're touching the ground, then they're already too long. Long nails actually can cause pain when your dog walks. Inside every nail is something called the quick. That's the blood supply for your dog. If you cut into that, it will hurt them and they will bleed. This is the tool that I use. It has a light on it so I can see better and a stopper so that I don't go too far. You need to trim small amounts at a time. You want the nail short enough that it's not hitting the ground, but still safe for your dog.
