Are you aware of the black history of Fort Ward Park in Alexandria, Virginia? This park is popular for many to take a walk, exercise, have a picnic, or cook out. My mom used to take me here as a kid all the time, and until recently, I never knew of the historic Jackson Cemetery located at this park. In 1884, Mr. James F. Jackson, a black man, purchased a parcel of land of this former Civil War Union fort. Jackson and his family lived on this land for 40 years, making their living by farming, doing laundry, and working as a driver. The Jackson family established a burial ground on their land for black citizens. It was speculated that Mr. Jackson and his family are buried here, as well as many other black citizens of Alexandria. Unfortunately, many of the grave markers have disappeared. So when visiting and enjoying Fort Ward Park, please take some time to remember Mr. James F. Jackson, his family, and the many unknown black citizens of Alexandria who've been laid to rest at this park. Happy Black History Month!
