Did you know the Tampa Theater used to be a Publix theater? No, not that Publix. But it was in fact part of the Publix Theater Company, which inspired the name for the grocery store chain. Publix theaters were known for their lavish and unique decorations, a well-known trait of the Tampa Theater. With its romantic Mediterranean courtyard, old world charm, and breathtaking nighttime sky, the Tampa Theater was a cool place to escape the Florida heat and was in fact one of the first commercial buildings in Florida with air conditioning. Since its grand opening in 1926, it's been a hub for the community, a place where people came together to enjoy not just films and live music, but all sorts of community events. To this date, the historic building has seen 5 million living guests and even a few not so living guests. It's a place that has helped define Tampa's identity, honoring its past while embracing its future.
