Video Transcript

What does this New Orleans cemetery have in common with the one beside St. Peter's Basilica? More than its name. Saint Rock's Cemetery Number One opened in eighteen seventy four for a German Catholic community and was modeled after Rome's Teutonic Cemetery. Both are known as composanto, Italian for Holy Field. The design mirrors it too. Wall vaults enclosed the grounds. Walkways divide the cemetery into sections, and the central path leads directly to the chapel. Later fourteen religious sculptures carved in Italy were added along the walls. Saint Rock wasn't simply inspired by a cemetery in Rome. It was created as New Orleans version of it.
